    idrk but i can just pay more money to have more allocated ram for this virtual machine. and there is no risk of power outage because it’s hosted in the digitalocean’s servers. their SLA stipulates 99.99% monthly uptime: https://www.digitalocean.com/products/droplets

    besides managing infrastructure for thousands of users is my day job. I’m not running this from my mother’s basement (i swear)

      and even if we max out vertical scaling (more cpu for the one machine that runs the lemmy instance) i can always deploy all of this with a load balancer and multiple machines sharing the work. it would be more expensive but it’s definitely doable
